Leeds Girls Fall in Basketball Regionals PDF Print E-mail

The Lady Greenwave fell to Greensboro in the regional tournament held at Alabama State University earlier today, 54-26. The Lady Greenwave were undefeated in their area, took the area championship, defeated Central-Coosa in the sub-regionals and finished with a 20-5 record. Congratulations to the girls on a great season and roll Greenwave! Next year also looks bright, because the team will return every player except for lone senior Erica Cowan, who has been sidelined with an injury for most of the season.

The Leeds girls basketball team downed Central-Coosa in a 43-42 thriller, coming from behind to take the win. They advance to the regionals.

Despite a hard fight, the boys fell 48-42. Congratulations to the boys and first year coach Rayford Williams on a great season and an area championship! Next year looks bright, because the boys returns all but two players.

The third time was the charm for the boys basketball team, as they finally defeated region opponent B. B. Comer, taking the area 8 championship. Not only does the 54-46 win at B. B. Comer's court give the Greenwave a taste of vengeance, it also secures home court advantage in the sub-regionals. That game will be played at Leeds High School this Friday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m.. The girls team will also play on that date, at 6:00 p.m.. Both teams will face Central-Coosa.

UPDATE: The time for the boy's game has been changed to 7:30 p.m..

Sports Fact: Baseball player, coach and manager Harry "The Hat" Walker called Leeds, Alabama his home. Walker most famously played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Walker helped the Cardinals win the World Series in '42 and '46, was the National League batting champion in '47 and was a two time National League All-Star. He was laid to rest in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Leeds.
